Theater Speaker Options

Palliser - Sequelle Microfiber Lounger w/ Bass Shaker Front stereo speakers, a center-channel speaker, surround speakers, and a powered subwoofer create an awesome home theater sound system. Each component has a specific task. Speakers from the same family will produce equivalent tone and harmony to ensure that the sound moves smoothly from speaker to speaker.

  • Front speakers handle the music and special effects. Tower speakers have the most impact, bookshelf speakers produce less bass, and wall- or ceiling-mounted satellite speakers are used with subwoofers. Speakers should be voice-matched; front speakers near the TV should be video-shielded.
  • Center-channel speakers anchor sound and action, delivering dialogue and more than half of the soundtrack. Placement should be directly above or below the TV, like mounted on the wall, or placed on a shelf. They are video-shielded. Speaker size depends on the front speakers and TV size; center-channel speakers must be voice-matched to the front speakers.
  • Surround speakers put you in the center of the action with ambient and atmospheric sounds. Speakers may be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or freestanding, but they should perform on the same level as front speakers. Dipole/bipole speakers have two high-frequency drivers, allowing more flexibility for placement and a wider sound field.
  • Most speakers cannot deliver the level of bass in most Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks; the subwoofer delivers the bass for a larger-than-life audio experience. Placing subwoofers in a corner can increase the impact; if placed near the TV, subwoofers should be video-shielded.
  • Speakers in chairs deliver sound to each seat via front and rear speakers, amplifier (determines the power that drives the speakers), subwoofer, and digital analog inputs. Chairs incorporate the amp, speakers, and wiring with easy-to-reach controls. Theater seating with bass shakers allows people seated in chairs to feel the bass as the sound is brought to life.
